[OCI] Did it really cost less?
2025-01-07
It's been about two weeks since we moved from OCI to AWS.
We took a day or so after the move to delete all of our resources on AWS, so how has the blog's cost been over the past two weeks?
Here are my AWS costs for December

The cost of Route53 domain connectivity, which is not covered by Free-Tier, and the cost of IPv4 resources in the VPC was about $5 per month, and OCI was

cost me not a single cent.
I'm very happy that I don't have to pay for domain connections, IPv4 resources, or even that it's free for life at this point.
In reality, if you're running a small service like this, it's unlikely to cost you much after the free trial ends, but as I emphasized in my last post, the role of the backend developer is to
get the most traffic for the least amount of money
So all the time spent running scripts to auto-create instances, panicking over my first ARM image, and tearing up CI/CD was well worth it.
In fact, the A1 I'm using as my blog instance is 3CPU/18GB, so if I were to start working on another project, I'd be able to split the instance I'm using and do it cost-free, so I'm glad I made the move.
